Pippa Winterbourne runs Moorehaven, the Oregon Coast’s quirkiest bed-and-breakfast and former home of world-famous mystery writer A. Raymond Moore. Guests come there to write their own crime novels. When a real-life murder takes a local’s life and washes a handsome boat pilot into her arms, Pippa is yanked into a deadly plot of her own. A tangle of secrets crashes past into present, and Pippa must uncover clues dating back to Seacrest’s Prohibition days, including a secret Moore himself hid from the world. Juggling her book-writing guests, small-town intrigues, secret club agendas, and a possibly fatal attraction, Pippa must sort fact from fiction to know who to trust before a desperate killer claims a final revenge nearly a century in the making.

Smugglers Scones Moorehaven Mysteries Volume 1 Morgan C Talbot 9781940215877 Books

What a fun book! I don't usually go for cozy mysteries, generally preferring stories that will take me deep into the characters' emotions so I can experience a true catharsis while reading it. Now I'm thinking I should revamp my criteria for a good read. Just because it doesn't leave me weeping by the end doesn't mean I can't enjoy it. And I really did. I loved this book.

It is often the world-building that draws me into a book. That was certainly true of this one. I loved the description of the old house, the detailed backstory about the famous author, the quaint seaside town, the quirky cast of characters, and the food. All of it. I loved all of it.

I totally want to spend the night in the Moorehaven Bed and Breakfast Inn. The only people who are allowed to stay there are mystery authors, but that shouldn't be a problem for me. I've written one mystery novel, so that counts, right? I hope so. Ms. Talbot, can you please give me Pippa Winterbourne's number? Or does the B&B have a website I can look up? A vacation in the Pacific Northwest sounds like just what I need right now.

I also craved scones the whole time I was reading this book. I craved them for about three days before I finally realized there are recipes at the end of the book. Yeah, you heard me. Scone recipes right there in the book! And, yep, I baked them. And they were delicious. I'd rather be eating them in the dining room of a historic bed and breakfast which was once the home of a famous author, but eating them in my own kitchen wasn't a terrible experience. Again, Ms. Talbot, that phone number, please? I need to book a room at this hotel. Now.

Okay, so the house is gorgeous and the food is delicious. What about story? Does it deliver? Absolutely! But it's the world-building that makes it so fantastic. I think that's often true of fiction that falls into one of these limited genres. You know the mystery is going to play out in a fairly predictable pattern. What makes it unique is the setting, the characters, and the backstory. And all those things came together nicely by the end. Things which were mentioned casually in early chapters became significant later on, rewarding the reader for paying attention at the beginning. And though the progression of events was predictable enough to qualify the book as a cozy mystery, the actual details of the mystery managed to take me by surprise.

Smugglers Scones Moorehaven Mysteries Volume 1 Morgan C Talbot 9781940215877 Books Reviews

A delightfully written mystery in a deliciously cosy town fog, abandoned lighthouse, an old speakeasy, and a tale of smuggling, plus... murder! The setting makes this tale. If you love a story that gets its tangles from the past, and solves those tangles in the present, you are going to thrill to this one! It's not in the least cliche, however. The dialogue is funny, the relationships warm, and the cast of characters, well, quirky would be a good word. Plus, it's interesting to get inside the mind of writers, mystery writers, that is. Besides, wouldn't you like to know over a hundred ways to kill someone without leaving a mark? Enjoy!
Welcome to Moorehaven, home to the personal papers of A. Raymond Moore, a deceased mystery writer of some repute. Moorehaven is now a B&B run by Pippa and her great-uncle, Hilt. They cater to current mystery writers who need a quiet place to bring their stories to life. When a murder occurs and Pippa saves a man from drowning in the ocean, she discovers that Moore left more than his personal papers behind when he passed away. With old secrets coming to life, Pippa is determined to find the killer and solve an old secret. This was an enjoyable debut in what I hope turns out to be a long running series. The characters are quirky, lovable and a nice mix of young and old. The plot was well done with lots of action and crisp dialogue.
SMUGGLERS & SCONES (Moorehaven Mysteries, #1) by Morgan C. Talbot is a wonderful new cozy mystery that introduces us to a special B&B in Seacrest on the Oregon coast and a cast of intelligent and quirky characters.
World famous mystery writer, A. Raymond Moore left his huge home, Moorehaven, on the Oregon coast in trust to his friend Hilt, the town’s former chief of police with the stipulation that it become a B&B for mystery writers only. Now that Hilt is older, he has hired his niece, Pippa Winterbourne to run the B&B. Pippa has modernized the advertising and recipes in her six years at Moorehaven and now has a large group of famous, new and want-to-be mystery authors rotating through Moorhaven’s doors.
When a small tourist fishing boat crashes in the middle of the night, Pippa rushes to help and saves the handsome Lakyn “Lake” Ivens. They both find out the next day that there was also a dead man on the boat. Lake has no memories of the accident or what happened to the dead owner of the boat. Pippa, with the help of Lake, the visiting authors and a cast of fun characters from Seacrest become tangled in a deadly plot that incorporates the town’s Prohibition history with the present.
Pippa is a strong and intelligent lead character. She loves Moorehaven, her job, the writers who stay at the B&B and all the characters that populate Seacrest. Her Uncle Hilt keeps the old mansion in working order, while also taking care of his old friend’s journals, papers and
books for future writers and scholars to study. At a few places in the book, it does slow down a bit, but I feel this is because there is so
much to set up and characters to introduce for the series. Overall though, the world-building was entertaining and interesting.
Characters make a cozy for me and this book is full of many that I can’t wait to revisit. Pippa is a great choice as a lead. The “Glaze and Gossip” group she is invited to join had me laughing out loud. Tyleen with her binoculars and Wallis the gloomy florist all added to town’s cast of unique characters. This is a wonderful story and I love that there will always be mystery writers and their books involved in each
story.
I am anxiously waiting for the next book in this series!
