Ultimate China Guide How to Teach English, Travel, Learn Chinese, & Find Work in China Nick Lenczewski 9781530332625 Books Reviews

The Ultimate China Guide really live up to its title. Lenczewski packs this book with more practical information and entertaining anecdotes than most readers would expect in just under 150 pages. He covers every aspect of living and working and traveling in China, from the perspective of an American who has spent years doing exactly that -- living and working and traveling in China. The primary focus is on teaching in China, and early chapters zero in on the various facets of the teaching life very well, from lesson planning tips, salary expectations and location considerations. As the book continues, Lenczewski expands his reach to include practical tips for nearly anyone visiting or working in China. He offers terrific advice o learning the various languages, on food, on popular and less popular but worthwhile destinations. But my favorite chapter is Chapter 12, which focuses on dating and provides a typical and entertaining exchange between the character of Nick and a young woman he has just met, Little Snow (a nickname). There is lots more relevant and thoughtful information, but as the book winds down, Lenczewski wisely includes many, many websites for the reader to consult on everything from visiting Beijing to Chinese entrepreneurship to job postings. In other words, this books is a gold mine of information and will provide invaluable help to nearly anyone in search of useful, China-related advice. There may be other books that go into greater depth on certain subject, such as Chinese language or business practice or education, but few will do it all as well as The Ultimate China Guide!
I would say that if you are thinking about moving to China and you do not really know where to start.. This book is for you! The guide is full of very helpful tips and it covers everything that you would like to know before moving abroad.

It is well written and funny. The author not only gives useful tips but also shares his own insight of life in China by including some anecdotes.

All in all, I would say that I highly recommend the guide!
Tons of useful information for how cheap it is. Definitely worth it. Inspired me to go to China because I was on the fence. Lots of good stuff about how to look for jobs at companies in China, how to interview and negotiate. For those thinking about English teaching, there is so much info on all of the possible venues, salary levels, recommendations about the best locations for teaching, what to expect in the classroom and also resources for English-teaching so you're not going in cold. In-depth advice on how to seriously learn Mandarin while you're there, lists a ton of language-learning resources. Lots of stuff about traveling throughout China, even about getting a driver's license and renting/buying a car.
This is a pragmatic and interesting book for the people who want to start a new life in China. The author takes advantage of his personal life experiences in China to write down abundant and detailed “China Guide”; besides the detailed introduction of job hunting, English teaching, Chinese learning, restaurants, travel, etc, the book also provides effective suggestions on how to get along with the Chinese and how to deal with culture shock, and interestingly, the author also provides a chapter named “Dating in China”. Between the lines, the careful readers can realize the process where the author became a native with a foreign face who can speak Chinese and lives a life like fishes in water from the original state that he knew nothing. By this token, on top of the answers to the questions about China, the book also helps the readers to build a Sino-west blend bridge within to rapidly blend into the Chinese culture and adapt to the local life.
Quick read. Awesome insight from someone who has lived the journey.
This is a really, really good book for anyone interested in living and working in China. It truly is a very thorough "guide" and will help anyone navigate their own way with an understanding of the opportunities there for work and travel. There is advice on the importance of choosing the right location to live and work as well as other insights that will shorten the learning curve of being in a different culture.
If you are looking for opportunities in China, either to work, to get to know people, to seek your future career path, or to experience the exotic culture, this book offers a wide variety of resources, from literature to pop cultural resources. It widely covers many topics and having the book with you on your journey in China will make you feel like you are in good hands.

In addition to the useful tips of living an everyday life in China, this book aptly integrates culture into personal experience, and thus makes it much more interesting to know about Chinese culture and society. In particular, I like how the author made sense of the meaning of face/mianzi through interacting with multiple people in China. Similarly, his work experience as a cultural liaison to work with both Chinese staff and American staff led to some funny stories through which I understood the beauty of language translation, or language mistranslation ☺

Being a Chinese myself, this book gives me refreshing ideas of what China is like, at least from a non-Chinese point of view. This is important because stories in the book sound very familiar to me but the author analyzed the underlying perspectives that I’d have never thought of. No matter what your connection with China is, I think this book is a good and easy read!
